That’s The Spirit!
We love attention to detail, that’s why the word is in our company name. We also love hearing about situations where paying attention to detail has a positive impact on the overall outcome of an initiative. Which is why the story of Rolls-Royce redesigning their Spirit of Ecstasy for their Spectre EV caught our eye…
…the entire automotive industry is shifting to electrification, and arguably the world’s most prestigious brand is no exception. The Rolls-Royce all-electric Spectre is scheduled for release in 2023, and their entire model lineup will jettison the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) by the year 2030 in favour of electric propulsion. In support of this initiative, Rolls-Royce took to redesigning their infamous Spirit of Ecstasy mascot in an effort to reduce aerodynamic drag.
The revised ‘flying lady’ is now smaller and with one leg in front of the other (reduces frontal area) and is also tucked into a slightly lower stance with revised robes (not wings) to reduce the drag coefficient (Cd). These modifications help to improve the overall Cd of the vehicle, and thus increase all important range.
The mascot was subjected to 830 hours of modelling (using Computational Fluid Dynamics) and wind-tunnel testing before arriving at the final design.
This attention to detail has synergy to that which we took when developing the protective silicone bumper that adorns our MoVE Coffee Table. Thankfully our tables don’t MoVE at the speed of a Rolls-Royce, therefore aerodynamics didn’t come into play. However, we meticulously sourced the most suitable bumper profile from 859 options, spending countless hours prototyping and testing the different profiles to achieve the best possible level of protection and seamless appearance in conjunction with the drawer shut-line.
It is this attention to detail that we believe makes the difference to the overall finished product, just as Rolls-Royce believe too with the development of the Spirit of Ecstasy.
And to Rolls-Royce we say…
That’s The Spirit!
